REDCLIFFE LEAGUES PADRES RETAIN COMMISSIONER’S SHIELD

Good things come in threes and for Redcliffe Leagues Padres Baseball Club and this could not have been truer with one or the most historic weeks in the club’s history, culminating in the retention of the Commissioner’s Cup with a 4-3 victory over Surfers Paradise today at Beenleigh. After having been named the co club of the year in the annual BADA awards, the club then won 50 t-shirts in a National Baseball Radio forum followed by today’s historic victory.

The Major A team made the most of the chance to defend the Commissioner's Shield they won for the first time last year, with a hard fought 4-3 win over the Surfer’s Wave. The usually big hitting Gold Coast players were shut down by the efforts of Padres Brian Debert. In a remarkable 8 innings outing on the mound, Debert gave up only six hits and one run, before being relieved by 2008 rookie Nathan Sharrow, who maintained his composure to hold out the opposition despite a late two run homer by Surfers' Chris Stephens. The Padres bats were busy with ten hits recorded including three to sixteen year old Lucas Bakker, two to Matthew Dawson and Dan Wilson and a double to catcher Jay Nilsson. The side played without the services of coach, Bob Nilsson (ably replaced by his brother, Ron) and star outfielder, Steen Greer who had flown to Perth to play for the Qld Rams in the Claxton Shield. A large crowd of supporters was on hand to celebrate the win for the second consecutive year in the annual battle between the North and South side league leading teams.
